China Syndrome

The China Syndrome (1979)

Today marks the anniversary for The China Syndrome. Although it doesn’t seemed to be remembered too well, at the time it had a huge impact as it was released just weeks before the Three Mile Island accident. Although I went to several of these locations many years ago, I finally got around to putting a page together for it!

The opening credits begin at Hollywood and Vine….

Jack Lemmon’s character lived at Valencia Fairways in Santa Clarita.

His character appeared to live at 24788 Masters Cup Way.

This is shot is on the walkway next to the Vista Valencia Golf Course.

This same spot was used in a deleted scene.

This spot is at Sand Wedge Lane and Masters Cup Way.

The car following him pulls out on Dronfield Avenue behind the house at 12770 Paxton Street in Pacoima, California.

The stop sign is at the corner of Dronfield Avenue and Paxton Street in Pacoima.

The chase continues on Paxton Street and he escapes on the ramp to 210 East.

This was shot on the 210 a the Paxton Street exit.

At the bottom of the exit at Paxton Street.

Many of the exteriors were shot at the Castaic Power Plant. Of course, you can’t get near this place, so some reference photos below that were found online.

The television studio was shot at what was then KTTV at Sunset and North Van Ness in Hollywood. It was demolished many years ago. Photos below courtesy of Seeing-Stars.com.

I haven’t made my way to this location yet, so Google Streetview shots for now. The post office is at 25842 1/2 Tournament Road in Valencia, California.

I’m guessing this alley was behind Globe Fixture at 212 South Los Angeles Street. All the buildings in that area have been long gone.

The bar was scenes were shot at the Hinano Cafe at 15 Washington Boulevard in Venice, California. I haven’t visited this location, but found this photo for comparison on their Google site.

These scenes were shot at Cal Arts at 24700 McBean Parkway in Valencia, California. I’ve been to this building before but on the opposite side for locations for The Bionic Woman.
