Altadena

Apt Pupil (1998)

With the horrible fires happening this week, Los Angeles has been heavily on my mind. Altadena was severely hit and reminded me that I visited some locations many years ago for Apt Pupil, but have yet to post them until today. Based on a story by Stephen King, the film was surrounded by controversy during production and never made much of an impact.

Kurt Dussander’s house is at 2396 Highland Avenue in Altadena. As you can see by my photos, it was heavily overgrown during my visit and the last picture below is from an old Google Streetview. I can’t confirm, but this house looks to be in the area of destruction by the fires.

The bus stops a few houses down at the corner of Highland Avenue and East Mendocino Street in Altadena.

The liquor stores was at 1850 Allen Avenue in Pasadena. I’m unsure if this area survived the fires.

Unfortunately, the school did not survive the fires. It is at 2184 Lake Avenue in Altadena. It has been used in other television and films including Rob Zombie’s Halloween (2007) for the elementary school interiors.

Todd Bowden’s house was a bit more difficult to track down. You would assume it would be in the Altadena area as well as it appears to be next to the same foothills, but it is actually over 45 miles away. It is located at 1500 Pathfinder Avenue in Westlake Village, California. I haven’t been to this house yet, so just some Googlestreetview and real estate shots for reference for now.

Some interiors of the house were also used as indicated by these pictures from when the home was for sale.

And here is the house across the street at 1499 Pathfinder Avenue.
