Today marks the 35th anniversary for John Carpenter’s They Live. Although I visited these spots more than a decade ago, I’m just now getting to putting them on this page. Shot mostly in Downtown Los Angeles, I made a map for location enthusiasts as well.
This shot of these buildings and subsequent shot were filmed at the corner of 4th Street and South Grand Avenue in Downtown Los Angeles.
This scene was shot at the City Hall Park Center at 200 North Main Street.
The area where John settles up with other homeless folks has been drastically changed and the church is now long gone, however you can get a good sense of where it was by the distinct building in the background of many shots. This is ear the corner of Colton and North Boylston Streets.
The alley is on Mercury Court between W 7th and W 6th Streets, the easiest way to find it is to go to 645 S Hill Street and the entrance is to the right of the jewelry store. We’ll come back to this spot later.
These two shots were filmed by the LA Athletic Club near 431 W 7th Street.
The two billboard buildings are at 631 South Olive Street and 512 West 7th Street.
This storefront was at 619 South Olive Street.
This is around 872 West 1st Street.
The newsstand was around 646 South Olive Street.
This scene was shot near the alley by 712 South Olive Street.
Although the front and interior of the bank was shot at 650 South Spring Street, the exit of the bank was shot in the alley behind 800 West 8th Street.
This location was torn down in 2018, but was around 1000 Mignonette Street.
Holly’s house is at 8634 Franklin Avenue.

The establishing shot of the hotel is by 310 West 6th Street.
The hideout building no longer exists but was on the 600 block of Imperial Street. Some of the buildings in the background can still be seen, including the grocery store from YOU Season 2.
